Paragraph Writing: Summative (20%)

3

Your Task: Demonstrate the learning that you have accomplished through Units 1 & 2 in COMM1085 by writing a fully developed paragraph in response to ONE of the following prompts.

Below you will see three (3) questions / prompts, each related to the readings and topics that we have explored previously. Choose the question that you feel most confident and knowledgeable about. You can delete the questions that you don’t answer or leave them blank, as you prefer.

Write your response in the text boxes provided. The boxes will expand if you want to write more than the space provided. Aim for a paragraph of no more than 250 words in length (approximately one page, double spaced).

Use “Save As” to give the file a new name after you begin to ensure that you do not accidentally submit the blank template for grading.

1. Personal Identity and Aging

In Marie Fitrion’s “Food for Thought” and McMaster University’s “Identity on the Plate,” we learn about the ways in which culture and heritage are strongly connected to food. Both articles discuss the importance of cooking and eating when it comes to knowing who you are. Both also show that identity is shaped by multiple influences.

What influences shape your own identity? How might these influences contribute to active aging? Explain and support your answer with at least one integrated reference to a text mentioned above, in addition to personal examples. Remember to cite and reference your source.

2. Alternative Housing for Seniors

In Megan Easton’s “Roomies with a Twist” and Kristy Woudstra’s “Why Seniors and Students Make the Best Roomies,” we learn about the many personal and financial benefits of intergenerational home sharing for both students and seniors. Multigenerational co-housing communities or senior co-living projects are two other models for older Canadians interested in non-traditional housing options.

What is the role of home care in these sorts of co-living arrangements? How might Personal Support Workers be involved in such co-care communities? Explain and support your answer with at least one integrated reference to a text mentioned above, in addition to your own ideas. Remember to cite and reference your source.

3. Technology and Social Isolation
In Gisele Galoustian’s “Robotic Cats are ‘Purr-fect’ Companions for Isolated Seniors” and Paula Span’s “Robo-Pets for Comfort in Isolating Times,” we learn about robotic pets as one potential solution to the social isolation that often afflicts older adults. Many seniors have also embraced other forms of technology, such as social media or online gaming, as a way of staying connected to friends, family, and larger community groups.

What role does technology play in reducing the negative impacts of social isolation? How can interactive technologies be better used in long-term care? Explain and support your answer with at least one integrated reference to a text mentioned above, in addition to your own ideas. Remember to cite and reference your source.
